SHEFFIELD’S Breastfeeding Friendly Awards recognise public places which offer a high standard of support for breastfeeding mothers.
Venues across the city can opt in for an award as a way of reassuring mothers that they are a breastfeeding friendly place to visit.
Places given the award can then display a sign which distinguishes them as pro-breastfeeding places.
The woman behind the campaign is mum of three boys, Clare Robinson.
“Sheffield is generally very breastfeeding friendly,” she said. “I’ve rung round social clubs and sports venues and they have all been very receptive.”
Clare has collated a list of all the breastfeeding friendly places in Sheffield, which features places in the city centre, the suburbs, and Meadowhall.
“It’s all about places making women feel confident and comfortable enough to breastfeed - it’s about a place creating the right atmosphere,” said Clare.
“The health benefits of breastfeeding are massive - it can prevent children from obesity and type two diabetes in later life, and it helps prevent against ovarian cancer and breast cancer in mothers.”
There are currently 186 public places, and 147 workplaces, in Sheffield which hold the Breastfeeding Friendly Award.
Sheffield is currently working towards the final stage of the The Baby Friendly Initiative - a World Health organisation and Unicef initiative.
