The Observer Food Monthly says Sheffield is the place to be when it comes to independent dining and drinking, and has listed the city and a host of it’s best places to eat and drink among its food favourites for 2020.

According to the prestigious food and drink guide: “The city’s food and drink scene increasingly rivals anything in the rest of the UK.”

Acclaimed restaurant Jöro, cocktail bar Public and food hall Kommune are all described as “exemplary”, while the tacos at Piña also get the nod.

Elm natural wine bar and dining, brunch at Tamper or Forge Bakehouse are also mentioned. As are the “impressive” small plate dishes at the Beer Engine.

“This all co-exists with Sheffield’s long-standing network of real ale and craft beer pubs,” the guide says.

Claire Thornley, editor of Sheffield culture guide Our Favourite Places, told the Observer: “When we first published in 2010 there was a slim eating and drinking section, now it’s growing by 20 pages each edition.

“Sheffield is a friendly, low-key city and relaxed casual dining has flourished here. It suits the city vibe.”

James O’Hara, the co-owner of Public which was named the Best Place to Drink in the 2018 Observer Food Monthly awards, added: “If people want their cities to carry on improving, spend money in independent places where that money goes back into the city.”
