Customers at McDonald’s have taken to social media to rant about the fast food giant’s offer - or lack of it.

The company advertised a free McMuffin on its app as part of a ‘freebie advent calendar’ alongside deals like a 99p Big Mac burger.

But a January diet was not on the cards for many, as the app crashed due to the sheer demand of customers wanting their freebie.

Despite some customers experiencing difficulties, McDonald's has said that over 50,000 customers successfully enjoyed their free McMuffin this morning.

One person tweeted McDonald’s over the issue: “Really upset that me and my dad went for a ‘free McMuffin’ this morning using the app however the app wouldn’t accept any payment methods/kept bugging.”

But some Twitter users criticised those who were after the free food: “People are going into absolute meltdown over the maccies app not working for a free McMuffin. Stop being tight and just pay the £2.”

A spokesperson from McDonald’s said: “We are sorry that some customers struggled to access this morning’s offer via the My McDonald’s App. The problem was as a result of a huge increase in traffic in a short period of time just before 11am and was resolved quickly, we apologise for any disappointment caused.

“We are taking every step to prevent this happening again with the daily offers available for the next three weeks.”
