The 71 Restaurant and Bar opened on December 14 last year at the former Feighting Cock Less pub on Montenay Crescent, between Parson Cross and Ecclesfield.

But founder Jordan Atkinson announced on Friday, January 10, that it had been forced to close due to what he called ‘unfortunate circumstances’.

The young chef, who previously ran an American soul food pop-up in the city, is, however, looking for a new venue nearby.

Mr Atkinson said: “We had to close due to issues with the landlord and we are currently in talks to open in Chapeltown.

“We’re just beginning talks so might not happen at this local but will be in Ecclesfield or Chapeltown and if it all goes OK we’ll be opening at the beginning of February.”

He added that business ‘wasn’t too bad’ during the month the restaurant had been open.

The restaurant won praise for its food but some residents criticised the exterior, saying it didn’t look like the most inviting place from outside.

Responding to those comments, Mr Atkinson said ‘I understand what they were saying about the outside. It was one of the many issues with our landlord’.

The Facebook page has already been updated to reflect the name of the new restaurant, which he said would be called Rebel Truffle.

Ahead of the opening, Mr Atkinson said he wanted to ‘change the food and drink scene around Ecclesfield’ with what he described as ‘my version of fine dining but without the pretentious atmosphere and small portions’.
