Sheffield’s annual celebration of the written word looks set to be the biggest and best yet.

Excitement is mounting for the 22nd Off the Shelf festival, which kicks off on October 12, after the launch of this year’s brochure.

The front cover features a specially-commissioned design by Matt Sewell, author of the bestselling Our Garden Birds, who has illustrated for the likes of The Guardian and the Big Issue.

For the third year running, business services firm Civica is sponsoring the three-week-long event.

Civica will be hosting a number of key events throughout the festival, including Fifty Years of Doctor Who with Daniel Blythe at the Showroom on October 29. The firm is also holding a writing competition for Sheffield schoolchildren based on the BBC show.

Richard Eyre, Sheffield Council’s major event manager, said: “We are so pleased to have Civica on board again this year.

“Their support has helped us ensure Sheffield’s literary festival continues to attract great writers, is able to develop new and inspiring events for visitors and our own communities, as well as address and debate core issues of the day.

“Our festival showcases the very best of the written and spoken word internationally.”
