Newly renovated Barnsley Birthing Centre has been officially opened by renowned South Yorkshire author Joanne Harris MBE.

The new seven bedded state-of-the-art facility, which takes the place of the old labour ward at Barnsley Hospital, was opened to patients from May 27.

It followed a seven month renovation, which was carried out by building contractors CD Potter & Sons.

Joanne, from Barnsley, officially opened the unit by cutting a ceremonial ribbon at a special event which was held in the maternity unit.

After the ribbon cutting guests were taken on a guided tour of the new unit.

A spokeswoman said: “There were also displays and information about the fantastic work that goes on to help the families of Barnsley.”
