Sheffield Bin Collections

Sheffield City Council have announced that only bin collections usually scheduled for Fridays will be impacted by the Christmas period.

For those who would have a bin collection on Christmas Day, this will now take place on Sunday, 27 December.

New Years Day bin collection will now take place on Saturday, 2 January 2021.

All other bin collections will be carried out as normal. Bins should be placed kerbside by 7am on the morning of your collection with the lid shut.

As additional waste is expected over the festive period, the council will allow for up to two more bags of waste to be collected on your scheduled date, between the 27 December and 22 January.

These bags will only be lifted if they are tied and placed next to your black bin by 7am.

Can I still recycle?

The council have announced that they will also allow for additional amounts of recycling to be uplifted alongside your recycle bin collection.

Up to two bags of extra tins, cans and plastic bottles will be collected, if placed in a tied carrier bag and put out with your brown bin.

Glass bottles or jars must be placed inside brown bins, otherwise the extra recycling will not be collected.

Sheffield City Council will also allow for small amounts of additional paper and card to be tied in a bundle and put next to blue bins for collection - however, the additional bundle should be no bigger than the size of the bin.

Additional recycling can also be carried out by residents by visiting your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).

HWRCs will be open between Sunday, 27 December and Thursday, 31 December from 10am to 4pm.

However, they will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and will close at 3pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Tips on reducing waste during the Christmas period

You can recycle cardboard boxes, Christmas cards and plastic bottles in your normal at-home recycling bin, as well as tins and empty aerosol cans. Gift wrapping usually cannot be recycled as it contains plastics which are not recyclable.

Foil from mince pies and turkeys can be recycled, but leftover food should be put in your general waste bin, textiles and empty cartons should also go in your waste bin.

Reduce food waste from your Christmas Dinner by storing leftovers and eating for Boxing Day lunch.

Real Christmas trees can also be recycled by cutting them down and placing into your garden waste bin for composting. The base and any decorations should be removed beforehand.
