SOME relationships are destined to go to the dogs – and this one did exactly that and got stronger.

Visitors to Owlerton Greyhound Stadium were treated to an evening of romance when Sheffield-born Chris Jacobs popped the question to girlfriend Louise Cunningham via the name of a sponsored greyhound race.

Not content with sponsoring the ‘Louise Cunningham Will You Marry Me Race’, Chris took to the PA system to ensure his wife-to-be got the message.

The couple, who live in Halifax, came to the races under the guise of celebrating Chris’s 26th birthday, but all their friends knew the exciting surprise Chris had in store.

Despite the fact Chris had been told by his now fiancee that he must not ‘ask her in public’, he had sponsored the 11th race of the night, chosen to name it after his question, and asked Louise to marry him over the loudspeaker.

Louise’s friend Joanne Austin said: “She didn’t know what was going on! She’d looked at the race card for the ‘Louise Cunningham Will You Marry Me Race’ and didn’t even notice!”
