An award-winning craftswoman from Italy, Sabrina Bottura, is showcasing a collection of her unique jewellery at Hillsborough’s Cupola Gallery.

The Hillsborough gallery was asked to help judge an Italian contemporary jewellery competition organised annually by Francesca Canapa from the Associazione Contemporanea Gioiellodentro and had to select a prize winner.

Cupola curator Karen Sherwood said: “It was incredibly difficult to select work only from images but it was a fabulous experience to get a flavour of what contemporary jewellers are currently producing in Italy.

“As one of the prizes was to showcase a collection in Cupola, we chose a jeweller who melded creativity, unusual materials and classic elegance into her work.”

Sabrina Bottura was chosen for combining a rich creative skill base into jewellery which demonstrated a love of striking design and a passion for felt and precious metals.

The artist originally studied graphic art before graduating to the art school in Verona where she undertook specialist training in technical jewellery skills including gemstone cutting and setting. In addition she has learned from master designers in the art of using felt.

“We are delighted to showcase Sabrina’s wonderful jewellery in Cupola Contemporary Art,” said Karen. “It’s lovely to have a little bit of Italy in Hillsborough – it is just a shame it didn’t arrive with added sunshine!”

The jewellery is on display as part of the current exhibition, Presence/Presents, continuing until January 9.
