Investigation finds huge blaze in Sheffield was ‘accidental’

A huge blaze in Sheffield which left a man fighting for life was accidental, an investigation has found.

The fire started in a window shop on Chesterfield Road, Heeley, on Sunday morning and spread to flats above.

Flames also got into the roof space of terraced row of businesses and homes.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at around 10.30am on Sunday and an elderly man was found inside the burning building during a search.

He was taken to hospital, where he was in a critical condition yesterday.

Police and firefighters launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze and the findings have now been made public.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “The cause of the fire has been recorded as accidental and was probably electrical in origin.”

At the height of the blaze there were 40 firefighters at the scene, with crews spending most of the day there.
