From a phantom army to the mysterious white lady - here are some Sheffield ghost stories to send a shiver down your spine

But the city is awash with ghostly sightings in some of the most unexpected places.

Here are some that you may not have heard of . . .

An entire phantom army was witnessed by the river in Attercliffe by a local vicar all the way back in 1661. According to the man’s diary it took more than an hour for the silent apparition to pass by.

The ghost of a member of staff is said to haunt the Ball Inn, Darnell, according to legend. It is said that the woman committed suicide after she found out she was pregnant and is said to haunt the upper floors and pull secured shelves from their brackets.

A dark figure is said to haunt the Bradwell train tunnel between Sheffield and Dronfield on the main line Chesterfield. The man has been spotted many times by railway workers over the years waving his hands frantically, but if anyone gets too close, the figure disappears.

A troop of Second World War soldiers are said to haunt the now-abandoned station in Chapeltown. It is said that the men died in an air raid while travelling through the station on a train.

The ghost of a monk is said to walk through a bricked-up door at Sheffield’s Ecclesfield Church. There have been many sightings over the years.

The ghost of Nora the maid is said to haunt the Firth Park Brushes, in Barnsley Road. The woman is said to have killed herself more than 200 years ago. When a school stood on the site, staff would regularly report lights turning on and off by themselves, and other strange phenomena.

The ghost of a bride is said to haunt Firvale Churchyard. She has been witnessed sitting on a bench with her face covered by a veil and weeping, as though she had been abandoned at the altar.

A ghostly matron is said to terrorise people sleeping in rooms off the Vickers Corridor at the General Hospital. People have woken to find the woman trying to strangle them.
