“There's a Bedford House in Doncaster I believe could have had some links to my grandmother’s family, whose maiden name was Bedford.

“ And there's a Garbutt Street in Bolton-on-Dearne I’d be very interested in learning the origins of."

Alan recently discovered a box full of photographs in the home of his father, who died last month.

These images have stoked his curiosity, and a desire to learn more about the little-known faces and names pictured.

“The photos were largely taken between 1895 and 1928,” says Alan, who is originally from Bolton on Dearne.

“They're of people and streets in Goldthorpe Bolton on Dearne, and Cudworth, and were passed down to my father, Peter Garbutt, from his step-grandfather, Herbert Jefferson.

"I've been learning all I can about the Jefferson family, from scraps of newspaper and information I've uncovered, and discovered that Herbert Jefferson served in Afghanistan before returning home and taking ownership of the Jefferson Transport Company, which he ran with two of his five brothers.”
