Incredible pictures reveal how great flood devastated Sheffield in 1864

It could be one of the most devastating events in Sheffield’s history after the newly-built Dale Dyke Dam burst, releasing hundreds of thousands of gallons of water into the city.

Sheffield’s great flood swept through the Loxley Valley and into Hillsborough where it joined the River Don, decimating much of the city and onto Attercliffe and as far as Rotherham – killing at least 260 people and destroying hundreds of buildings.
