Barbara Wragg and her son David Wragg grew up in Loxley - where the bandit is believed to have been born - which inspired Barbara to try and track down his true identity.

The book follows her personal journey finding out more about the legend and makes links to king of Scotland, Robert the Bruce.

She started writing it in 1987 and spent decades piecing together information from newspapers, books and her own research 'in the field' at historic spots. Her hunt took her from South Yorkshire to Nottingham, Scotland and even overseas.

She grew ill while looking for a publisher and died last September aged 95 before she could get it to print.

Now, David is hoping to share it with the world. He was inspired when Sheffield Council announced support for a campaign – by Sensoria Festival and the Centre for Contemporary Legend at Sheffield Hallam University – to celebrate the folk hero's connections to the city.

As a local resident, David said it would 'make his world' to see Hallamshire do more to honour its place in the story and said his mother would have loved to see it too.

He said: “I've been wanting for this for years. I just want Sheffield to start it off. Anybody can see he was born here, all the valley is steeped in history.

“Sheffield should put some money into it, get the valley up and coming and get people back into nature. If people know he was born in Sheffield they’re going to want to see where he was born. It’s a fantastic setting. It’s crying out for it, it just needs people to realise what’s there.”

Sensoria Festival, the Centre for Contemporary Legend, Bradfield Parish and Sheffield councils are working together on ways to celebrate the rich history of the legend in Loxley and across the region.
