Once the high street was the place to buy everything – but while brands have always come and gone, the pace of closures has intensified in recent years as online shopping has disrupted the traditional way of trading.
We have rifled through the archives to recall some of the shops that have closed their doors in Sheffield.
5. Maplin
Maplin, headquarted in Manvers, Rotherham, was regarded as one of the biggest electrical retailers in the country, with more than 200 stores and 2,500 staff. The shop in Sheffield city centre on Pinstone Street closed in 2018 after the firm collapsed into administration. Photo: JPIMedia
6. Fopp
Richard Hawley is pictured performing at record store Fopp on Division Street in September 2005. The branch, on the site of the old Warp Records shop, closed in 2007 when the business called in receivers. Some Fopp sites were later saved by HMV and still trade today, but not Sheffield's. 7. BHS
BHS on The Moor closed in summer 2016. Former owner Sir Philip Green famously sold the chain - which employed 11,000 - for £1 in 2015. Photo: JPIMedia
8. Blockbuster
Film rental store Blockbuster had several shops in Sheffield; the chain was hit by the shift away from videos and DVDs, and the city's last branches on Ecclesall Road and at Crystal Peaks closed in 2013. Photo: JPIMedia
