Amazing pictures reveal excavated remains of Sheffield's lost castle

Photographer Paul Rowland took thousands of pictures of 11 deep trenches that were dug by archaeologists in 2018 where Sheffield Castle once stood.

The project, which suggested there have been 1,000 years of constant activity at the site, took place ahead of the area’s redevelopment – and now Paul has collected his pictures in a book, ‘Sheffield Castle: A Trench By Trench Photographic Record of the 2018 Archaeological Excavation’, available at www.blurb.co.uk to buy. Here are some of his best images.
