Over the weekend Sheffielders saw their Christmas plans scuppered with the government proclaiming the ‘five day’ break from some measures too risky- and it’s taking its toll on supermarket queues as shoppers race to stock up.

This was the case at the Tesco Superstore on Abbeydale Road today (Monday, December 21) where long queues of masked shoppers could be seen from the store entrance all the way down the length of the car park.

This afternoon Boris Johnson addressed the nation insisting people should continue to shop ‘as normal’ after France closed its border with the UK over fears surrounding the new strain of Covid-19.

Supermarket bosses have called for calm in a bid to avoid a repeat of the chaos seen back in March, with customers across the country bulk-buying toilet paper, flour, pasta and other staples.
