By the time you’re reading this, seven members of The Star’s news team will have embarked on The Mighty Hike for Macmillan.

This marathon-length trek in aid of cancer support will take an estimated 50,000 steps and probably around 12 hours, and no one will cross the finish line without some very sore feet.

But seven of the Star’s reporters - Nancy, Claire, Ciara, Finn, Joe, Kim and Alastair - are up to the challenge along with scores of others to raise as much as possible for Macmillan.

If you would like to donate, The Star’s team you can do so HERE

Wish us luck - we’re going to need it.

What is The Mighty Hike?

The Mighty Hike Peak District is a 26-mile walk beginning and ending in beautiful Bakewell on Saturday, July 18.

Hundreds are booked to take on the challenge, with the first wave of walkers starting at 7.30am.

Macmillan kindly supply walkers with regular water stops and even meals along the way - all the participants have to do is put one foot in front of the other and not give up.

The Star’s seven reporters have got their boots on and their blister plasters packed for the big day - please consider donating to our JustGiving page in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Surely you’re going to do more than just walk a lot, right?

That’s right! You can expect regular updates from the team all day as the miles wind down.

Be sure to follow The Star’s Facebook page where the team will post video updates throughout the Mighty Hike - everything from team vlogs to scenic views, to impromptu interviews with other walkers about why they’re hiking as well.

We also hope to show off all the benefits and support Macmillan gives to walkers along the way, and hopefully inspire others to sign up for 2027’s event.

We may look a bit shabby and dishevelled by mile 26 - you’ll practically watch us grow more delirious in real time as the hours go by.

In honour of The Man with the Pram

And, we have the best endorsement from a Macmillan champion we could possibly hope for - Sheffield’s one and only legendary fundraiser, John Burkhill.

“I think it’s cracking The Star is taking on this challenge,” said John.

“Come everyone, let’s raise as much money as we can for Macmillan!”

The Star’s modest goal of £1,000 pales in comparison to John’s heroic fundraising, who with over 1,060 races under his pram has raised over £1.2m for Macmillan.

But after so many stories shouting about his achievements, we knew it was time to help him on the way to his second million through more strenuous, direct means.
