This means mixing with other households will be banned indoors but not outside, and that pubs will stay open.

The news is expected to be formally announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Parliament later this afternoon.

However, Mr Jarvis said that just imposing a stricter lockdown without providing additional support would mean the county could be left suffering under lockdown conditions for a prolonged period if time.

He said: “We cannot afford this without additional support - otherwise we will languish in local restrictions with no clear way out.

"We've put a plan to Govt and are awaiting more details. Will update asap.”
