Son who set up camp outside Sheffield hospital to visit dad offered room stay in

Scott Hayes, 38, from Colchester, travelled up to Sheffield so that he could visit his dad every day after he was left paralysed in a hit and run incident.

Due to Covid restrictions, Scott can only visit for an hour a day and is not able to stay at the hospital, so he decided to pitch up a tent nearby.

He was being helped by members of the local mosque, as well as Tesco Express staff who charged his phone every day.

Now the council has offered to put Scott up for the duration of his stay in Sheffield.

Scott said: “This is a happy ending to this story. It just show how nice the people in Sheffield are.

"The community where I have been camping [Fir Vale] has been lovely. It is so diverse, multicultural and welcoming.

"And then today when I went to the hospital I was given a piece of paper saying the council are willing to put me up while I am visting my dad.

"It is a really positive outcome and I am really grateful and so are my family. This just shows that there are some really good people out there.”

While he was camping in Fir Vale Scott and his family raised money to make a flower display to thank the nurses, who he said were doing an ‘amazing’ job looking after his dad on the Osborn Ward.

"This has really made me appreciate the NHS more than I ever have done before,” Scott said. “They have a hard time at the moment and they could not have done a better job with me and my dad.”

Scott’s dad Trevor, 63, was brought to Sheffield to stay on the specialist spinal injury unit after he was hit by a car near his home in Skegness in March.

The collision left his paralysed from the eyes down.

Scott travelled up to Sheffield on April 6, and has been staying in his tent since he arrived.

Sheffield City Council has been approached for comment.
