More than 70 people took part in the first The Connect 5K – Move Against Dementia which is organised by the Sheffield-based Ingle Runners and supported by Parkrun UK.

Former Sheffield Central MP and sports minister Richard Caborn, patron of the Brendan Ingle Foundation, launched the event.

He said: “Dementia affects so many and is part of many people’s lives, both young and old and their families and communities, that we thought it would be great to support the work being done in our communities by establishing the first parkrun aimed towards Dementia.

“It’s great to see initiatives like this in Sheffield.”

The Ingle Runners-led Connect 5K – Move Against Dementia will take place at Sheffield’s Concord Park on the last Saturday of every month, with a chance to meet at Concord Leisure Centre for a hot drink and a chat afterwards.

Bridget Ingle, one of the event organisers, who set up and launched the foundation named after her late father, famous boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, said: “It’s important people, their families, carers and friends don’t feel they are on their own dealing with loved ones suffering with dementia and feel they can continue to be part of the community and take part in exercise and enjoy it along with others who offer them company.

Runs take place on the last Saturday of every month, from 9-10am – search CONNECT 5K: Move against Dementia on Facebook.
