Sheffield Hallam University staff released a video, where Lisa Reidy, associate dean for global and academic partnerships, said: “I’m here today to deliver a message of solidarity and support to our friends, colleagues, alumni and partners in China.

“We’ve watched the development of coronavirus with concern, but can assure you that we’re here for you during this difficult time.”

James Robinson, director of global development and partnerships, added: “We will take good care of our Chinese students who are here in Sheffield, and our thoughts are with all our students who are studying in our partner institutions.

“We’re right behind you, wherever you may be in the world.”

A spokesperson for the University of Sheffield said: “We understand the news of the new cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) confirmed in the UK over the weekend may cause concern and anxiety among our staff and students, so we want to reassure you that we are continuing to carefully monitor the situation.

“There are currently no suspected cases at the University and the current risk to individuals remains ‘low’.

“And if you feel unwell we urge you to self-isolate, contact NHS 111 and your department.

“In the meantime, staff and students are encouraged to continue their routine as normal, and students should attend classes and examinations until and unless the University advice changes.”
