Sheffield unites in grief after baby with Covid-19 dies at Children’s Hospital

Sheffield residents have spoken of their sadness at the death of a 13-day-old baby who tested positive for coronavirus.

The baby is believed to be the youngest victim of the disease in the UK, and their death was announced in Thursday's coronavirus death toll in English hospitals.

The announcement came as Sheffield Children's Hospital confirmed that a child died on Monday after being admitted in a critical condition.

The hospital, which has not confirmed the age of the child, said that they had tested positive for Covid-19 but the cause of death had not been determined.

The child is one of 284 patients to have died in Sheffield hospitals so far after contracting coronavirus.

Sheffield Children's Hospital said in a statement: “Sadly, on Monday, June 15, a child passed away at Sheffield Children's having been brought in to the hospital in a critical condition.

“Attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

“The cause of death is not yet known. Tests have confirmed that the child had Covid-19, but it isn't yet clear if it was a contributing factor.”

John Somers, chief executive of Sheffield Children's Hospital, said: “Our sincere condolences go to the family.”

Hundreds of Sheffield residents have expressed their sadness at the death and passed on their condolences to the baby’s family in Facebook posts.

Margaret Rodgers posted:”R.I.P little one, so sad, the parents must be devastated.”

Kirsty Mayo added: “So sad, my heart breaks. Sweet dreams little one.”

And Kelly Gould added: “This has to be my worse fear, poor baby. I can’t imagine the pain the parents are feeling.”

Sarah Green said the death was ‘every parent’s worse nightmare’ and sent her ‘deepest condolences to the family’.

Julie Wylie added: “So sad that this horrible virus as taken a life so early.

“R.I.P sweetheart and condolences to the family at this hard time.“News like this just breaks my heart.”
