Sheffield rugby club’s ‘classy gesture’ after young player tragically dies, aged 23

Earlier this month, Scunthorpe Rugby Union Football Club announced that first XV player James Walker had passed away.
In a statement, Scunthorpe RUFC said: "Tragic news coming from Scunthorpe RUFC this morning. 1st XV player James Walker has sadly passed away.

Hide Ad“Thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and teammates. The fixture away at Chester RUFC today has been postponed as a mark of respect."
Following his death, the club launched a #4Jimmy appeal, aiming to raise £50,000 for mental health charity One For The Lads.
On Saturday, Sheffield Tigers’ announced on Twitter that they would be supporting the appeal with the first-team squad donating their match fees to the appeal.
The team played for free against Otley Rugby Club, running out 21-6 winners, with a players’ raffle afterwards.

Hide AdPaul Walker, chairman of Sheffield Tigers, said: “I am very proud of our boys for donating their money and shows what a great club and sport we follow.”
One For The Lads is a Scunthorpe-based men's mental health support group that helps people with mental health issues and depression.
The club will also hold a mental health awareness meeting at their home ground on Wednesday evening.
Head coach Jamie Broadley, who works as the staff welbeing lead at Derbyshire Community Health Services - part of the NHS - will give a talk on the importance of looking after mental health and well-being

Hide AdA raffle will also take place on the night to raise further funds, with a signed Jonny Wilkinson rugby ball up grabs.
The event is open to the public and tickets cost £10. Anyone wanting to attend should phone Paul Walker on 07916 812161.
