Scientists are urging people to wear face masks to Christmas dinner amid fears of a third wave of coronavirus across Europe.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have warned there could be a spike in deaths as the UK prepares for a five-day relaxation in lockdown measures that will see families permitted to mix over the festive period.

Issuing new guidance today, WHO said that gatherings should should be held outsoors if possible and that participants should ‘wear masks’ and maintain social distancing.

It said: "Indoor gatherings, even smaller ones, can be especially risky because they bring together groups of people, young and old, from different households, who may not all be adhering to the same infection prevention measures.

“Gatherings should be held outside if possible, and participants should wear masks and maintain physical distancing.

"If held indoors, limiting group size and ensuring good ventilation to reduce exposure risk are key.

"It may feel awkward to wear masks and practise physical distancing when around friends and family, but doing so contributes significantly to ensuring that everyone remains safe and healthy.”

It comes as the Government faces pressure to ‘cancel Christmas’ after scientists and politicians argued it would cause a surge in cases and deaths from the virus.

But with millions looking forward to spending time with their family at the end of the month, Boris Johnson has insisted it is ‘too late’ to back out of the five-day ‘three bubble’ Christmas plan.

The Government is expected to release a statement on the plans later today after talks were held this morning.
