‘Outpatient care is now the norm’ says consultant at Sheffield's Weston Park Hospital

Dr Bernie Foran, consultant clinical oncologist specialises in the treatment of head and neck cancers.

She said: “I’ve only been here for half of Weston Park Hospital’s life – I started in 1998.

“Weston Park has seen much change as it has adapted to the changes within the NHS and healthcare in general. As more outpatient treatments have become the norm, ward space has reduced from three acute wards and a ‘hostel’ facility to two acute wards.

“Our desire to improve the therapeutic benefit and reduce the side effects of treatments in head and neck cancer patients has been a key driving force in developing and utilising the technological developments which have occurred in radiotherapy. Weston Park has shown a true pioneering spirit in this regard. We were one of the first centres within the UK to start using the radiotherapy development of intensity modulated radiation therapy when it first became available for clinical use in 2003.”
