New £1.4m cancer robot unveiled at Sheffield Hospital

A new surgical robot that has officially been unveiled today

A brand-new surgical robot that will help treat cancer patients has officially been unveiled today at Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

Funded by a £1.4 million donation from Sheffield Hospitals Charity - the largest single donation the charity has ever made - the robot is set to benefit hundreds of patients across the region.

The advanced “da Vinci Xi” system allows surgeons to carry out highly precise, minimally invasive operations for a range of cancers, including lung, bowel, stomach, liver, pancreas and kidney.

Controlled by a surgeon at a console, the robot can perform tiny, complex movements that go beyond what the human hand can achieve.

This means patients can expect smaller incisions and faster recovery times - often returning home within days or weeks.

The new technology will also help meet growing demand for less invasive procedures, particularly in complex areas of the body like the chest and abdomen.

This marks a major step forward for Sheffield’s hospitals, with the Northern General now joining the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in offering robotic-assisted surgery.

The existing system at the Hallamshire is mainly used for bladder, prostate and womb procedures.

Leaders say the investment will make a real difference to cancer care in the region, improving outcomes and helping more patients recover quickly.

Beth Crackles, Chief Executive at Sheffield Hospitals Charity, said: “Our incredible supporters have now enabled two game-changing investments in robotic surgery.

“Offering minimally invasive procedures and faster recovery times, the new surgical robot will be situated at the Northern General Hospital – a sister to the surgical robot located at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, which was funded through a philanthropic gift to the charity in 2019.

“This is a tremendous boost for cancer patients locally, and we are truly grateful to the generosity of the people of Sheffield for making it possible.”
