The first patient to die in Sheffield was 78-year-old Leonard Gibson, from Oughtibridge, who was treated at the Northern General Hospital.

Kirsten Major, Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Sadly, we can confirm that as of March 26, 2020, eight patients being cared for at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have died after testing positive for COVID-19.

“The families of these patients have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this very difficult time.”

Relatives of Mr Gibson are trying to arrange a virtual funeral for the coronavirus victim because of social distancing advice.

They hope to broadcast the service for friends and family unable to attend.
