Organ donation is an incredibly difficult issue for many families.

It is one of those subjects that most people have a strong opinion on but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the same because your are related or married.

I know many people who hate the idea of bits being removed from their bodies, even though they completely understand that they will be far beyond caring at that stage.

But I know more who see this as a wonderful chance to help others without actually having to do anything yourself.

The law has changed recently so that individuals have to opt out of organ donation rather than opting in.

If you have ever read the words of anybody who has a relative on one of those terribly long waiting lists then you must agree that this was a long overdue decision. It is a gift which we would all want to accept if we found ourselves or a loved one in that awful situation.

That is why it is only right that we do the same for others.

Organ donation isn’t something that many of us have to think about much any more unless we are vehemently opposed to it for ourselves.

However, some families can hardly afford to think about anything else. That feeling of knowing you could be saved but might not be must be unbearable. How would you feel if that was your child, wife, husband, mum or dad?

While we continue to show our love for the NHS and everyone who works within in, there are things we can all do to appreciate their every day miracles more. Understanding the importance of organ donation and what it means personally for so many is one of those.
