Covid cases continue to accelerate at Sheffield University, with 91 cases confirmed in one day

Coronavirus cases continue to rise following an outbreak at Sheffield University, with 91 cases confirmed among the staff and student population in just one day.

An online tracker reporting daily cases shows that 91 cases were confirmed at the institution on Thursday, October 1.

Since the start of the academic year, there have been a total of 116 confirmed cases.

It comes after Sheffield was escalated to an area of ‘enhanced support’ on the Government watchlist.

A university spokesperson said: "We recognise how difficult it is for students who are new to Sheffield and need to self-isolate because of Covid-19 cases.

"To make sure we are supporting students in the best way possible, we will contact all students who are self-isolating to check on their welfare and offer practical and emotional support."

The university said those affected were following government guidelines and support was available, and that no entire student accommodation blocks are in lockdown at present.
