The vaccine should help reduce the rates of serious illness, save lives and reduce pressure on the NHS and social care services.

People will be contacted directly by the NHS when it is their turn to receive a vaccination. For most, this will be in the form of a letter from either their GP or the national booking system.

GP surgeries will begin vaccinating patients from Thursday, starting with the over-80s.

Sports stadiums and conference centres will also be used as vaccination hubs for the wider population. Mass vaccination hubs at seven sites across England will begin operations next week, Downing Street has confirmed. None of these sites are in South Yorkshire, but that could change as venue bosses make more sites available.
