But what does that mean for people in Sheffield when it comes to meeting other people, travelling and playing sport?

The Government is set to publish a 50-page document at 2pm setting out in greater detail its lockdown exit strategy, as outlined by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his address to the nation, but here’s what we know so far.

How much am I allowed to exercise, and can I play sport?

From Wednesday, people are being encouraged to take ‘unlimited amounts’ of outdoor exercise, in contrast to the one daily piece of exercise previously permitted.

Mr Johnson said people would be allowed to sit in the sun in their local park or drive to other destinations, though they must continue to observe the rules on social distancing and stay two metres apart from anyone from outside their household.

People will be allowed to play sport but only with members of their own household, according to the Prime Minister.

Government officials have said that tennis, water sports, angling and golf will be permitted as long as social distancing is enforced but foreign secretary Dominic Raab said eleven-a-side or even five-a-side football would not be possible.

Can I meet other people?

The Government has said it is OK to meet people from outside your household outdoors provided you maintain social distancing, but there is some confusion over how many people you are allowed to meet.

A government official said on Sunday evening that the new rules mean you can meet only one person from another household outdoors but Mr Raab suggested it would be OK to meet one family member in the morning and another in the afternoon or to meet both your parents at the same time.

The foreign secretary said it was not safe for people from different households to mix inside the home.

How far can I drive and can I take public transport?

Mr Raab said people can drive ‘as far as you want’ to walk in a park or a ‘particular area you’re fond of’ as long as they maintain social distancing.

The Government’s advice is to avoid public transport ‘if at all possible’ because social distancing must be maintained and capacity will therefore be limited.

Other countries have made it mandatory to wear face masks on public transport but there is not yet any guidance from the UK government to wear them on public transport or in supermarkets.

Should I return to work?

Where possible, people who can work from home are being told to continue to do so.

But Mr Johnson said that anyone who can't work from home, such as those in construction or manufacturing, should be ‘actively encouraged’ to go to work.

Mr Raab said people should go back to work where possible from Wednesday.

He said the Government has been working to establish new guidance for employers to reduce the risk of infection.

What happens if I break the rules?

The fine for people breaking the restrictions has been increased from £60 to £100, rising to a maximum of £3,200.
