This is what Sheffield Star readers think about easing the coronavirus lockdown

Star readers have had their say on how people have observed social distancing where they live and given their thoughts on easing the lockdown.

The survey, carried out by JPIMedia titles across the UK over the weekend, asked readers a series of questions about the lockdown and how the different administrations have responded to it.

One question asked The Star readers how closely they think people are sticking to social distancing rules in their area.

Just 12.5 per cent of respondents felt residents in their neighbourhood were following the guidelines ‘very closely’, compared to 45.77 per cent who felt folk were sticking to rules ‘somewhat closely’.

Meanwhile, 25.53 per cent of readers answered ‘not very closely’ and 14.96 per cent ‘not at all closely’.

Nationally, just 12 per cent answered ‘very closely’, compared to 43 per for ‘somewhat closely’, 28 per cent for ‘not very closely’ and 17 per cent for ‘not at all closely’.

When asked how comfortable they felt about doing certain things again for the first time since lockdown began on March 23, 65.58 per cent of Star readers said they would be comfortable visiting family; 53.94 per cent would be comfortable meeting a small group of friends; 31.51 per cent would be comfortable returning to their workplace and 14.73 per cent would be comfortable taking public transport.

Across the UK, visiting family topped the polling with 69 per cent saying they would feel comfortable doing so.

By comparison, 60 per cent would be comfortable meeting up with a small group of friends; 37 per cent would be comfortable returning to their place of work and 18 per cent would be comfortable taking public transport.

Almost 12,000 people completed the survey, with 6,816 respondents in England, 3,454 in Scotland and 1,018 in Northern Ireland.

The survey ran from Friday May 22 to Tuesday May 26.
