What measures our readers thought should be imposed to combat Covid-19

The UK could see 50,000 new coronavirus cases a day by mid-October if there was to be no further restrictions, which would be expected to lead to around 200 deaths per day a month after that.

That’s the view of the Government’s scientific advisers this week as the Prime Minister prepares to introduce further measures in England later today.

We asked you through our Facebook and Twitter channels what measures you thought should be imposed, if any, and here is what some of you told us:

Brett Walker told us: “I have a mate in Thailand and they had a two-week total lockdown and closed the borders with no-one at all in or out. They’ve had hardly any deaths and now they’re back open and back to normal virus free. Why couldn’t our government bite the bullet and do the same and life would be nearly back to how we knew it before this virus came?”

Annie Leach said: “Short two week lock down as soon as possible. Better than waiting until the numbers of cases and deaths we had back in March. We all complained they waited too long then, so let’s have a shorter lock down quickly this time. Two weeks would be better than months.”

Walter David Lidster felt differently: “Remove all restrictions,” he said. “More people die through cancer an other ailments than Covid. The Government can’t afford another total lockdown. How many more people are going to loose there jobs and livelihoods?”

Jonathan James Porter agreed: “Lift the lockdown and get on with our lives. We have to live with it because like it or not the damage is done. The Government doesn’t have a clue and has not had one from start.”

John Cutts said: “Enforce the wearing of masks, especially in shops. No mask, no entry, simple!”

Robina Swift hit out at the Prime Minister. She said: “Boris Johnson should stop treating people like they are children. With any virus there's a risk, but they don't go away, they come back every year. This is just a new one. He should let us use our initiative regarding our own lives, instead of telling us what we can and can't do and making the nation feel like they are in a giant prison. Where did our human rights go, as this goes against them?”

Stella Stoker had a simple solution. “Wear a mask or wear a ventilator,” she said. “if you can’t, don’t go out. If you have a condition and can’t wear one, stay in or get someone to go the shops for you. You are not exempt from the virus.”
