It comes after it was reported at the weekend that Sheffield was getting ‘enhanced support’ as it was ‘high’ on the list of cities at risk of local lockdown.

In a statement last week Greg Fell explained that a local lockdown would be the last resort, however warned that the risk of a second wave would be higher in the winter when ‘all the conditions’ for increased infection rates would ‘be present’.

To limit the rate of infection, reduce the chances of a second wave and prevent a local lockdown from being put in place, the council are asking people to take special notice of the guidelines around social distancing even as restrictions are eased.

A spokesperson from the council said: “We do not want to see a local lockdown in Sheffield.

"Please help us to achieve this by following the guidance, by social distancing up to 2m, by staying at home still as much as you can, by washing your hands regularly and wearing face coverings in confined or crowded places.”

In Rotherham it was announced today that everybody will now be tested, regardless of whether or not they have symptoms, as the infection rate there remains among the highest in the country.
