NHS England said delays in the length of time to confirm publicly a death of somebody testing positive for Covid-19 can occur for reasons such as an individual being tested post-mortem or difficulties in tracing and informing family members. All figures provided are given for at least one day previous.

Kirsten Major, Chief Executive of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Sadly, we can confirm that since March 17th 2020, 10 patients being cared for at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals have died after testing positive for COVID-19. The families of these patients have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this very difficult time.”

“We have been asked by some of the families of the patients who have died to respect their privacy and not give any further information about their loved ones. We will therefore only release details of further patients who pass away if their families request us to do so.”

The director of Public Health in Sheffield has explained why the city has more confirmed coronavirus cases than other areas of a similar size.

One more person who tested positive for Covid-19 has also died in Doncaster.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 deaths in the UK is now 759 – a increase of 181 in 24 hours.
