Other councillors from the region have taken to social media to show their support, with Labour and Co-operative Party member Ben Curran, who represents Walkley, sending wishes to Boris Johnson and veteran Rochdale MP Tony Lloyd, who is also in an intensive care unit with Covid-19.

Mr Johnson is conscious but has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to deputise for him "where necessary".

A 'get well soon Boris' message has appeared on the Winston Churchill statue in central London.
