In Prime Minister’s Questions this afternoon, the South Yorkshire metro mayor urged the government to reassure people that they would work with local authorities, the NHS and leaders as the county is placed under ‘very high’ level restrictions from Saturday, October 24.

It comes after Sheffield City Council leader Julie Dore criticised the £41 million financial support package the region has been given to help people under the measures – which prevents households from mixing and will force bars and pubs that don’t serve food to close.

In a tweet, Mr Jarvis said: “Our £41m support package for South #Yorkshire will help to support workers and businesses.

“But let’s not kid ourselves, beating this virus will take continued sacrifice from us all.

“We need@ukgovernment to repay that sacrifice and work with us to overcome this disease.”

The Sheffield City Region mayor said he thinks moving the county into the highest tier restrictions “is the right course of action” in an address to Parliament today (Wednesday, October 21).

He urged health minister Edward Argar to commit to working alongside South Yorkshire’s leaders and local authorities as they navigate the Tier 3 measures which come into effect this weekend.

The Sheffield mayor said: "The financial support will provide some help for our people and our economy but we all understand that it will mean sacrifice.

"Families will be separated, workers will suffer and businesses face uncertainty.

"So I need the minister and the Government to repay that sacrifice by working closely with us, with our local authorities and with our NHS.

"Together we need to do everything we can to get a grip of this disease so our region can do everything we can to move out of these restrictions as soon as possible.”

The health minister said it was “abundantly clear” that Mr Jarvis and his colleagues have the best interests of the region.

Mr Argar added: "I can absolutely give him that commitment of course, I and my colleagues look forward to continue working in close cooperation as we move forward to beat this disease in his area.”
