The South Yorkshire area where coronavirus cases are falling fastest

The coronavirus infection rate is continuing to fall across South Yorkshire but it is falling much faster in some parts of the region than others.

Rotherham’s weekly Covid-19 infection rate is down to 227.2 new cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to January 31 – the latest date for which reliable figures are available – from 279.6 the previous week.

Barnsley has also seen a big reduction, with the rate there falling from 263.3 to 214.3 during the same period – a weekly drop of 18.6 per cent.

Sheffield has South Yorkshire’s lowest infection rate, at 214.1, which is 11.6 per cent down from the 242.1 recorded the previous week.

And in Doncaster, the rate has dropped just 0.6 per cent, from 227.3 to 226.0.

Across the UK, there have been 162,150 new cases reported during the latest seven days for which reliable figures are available, giving a weekly infection rate of 242.8.
