'Some days better than others:' Number of Doncaster Covid-19 hospital patients drops

The number of people being treated in Doncaster’s hospitals for Covid-19 has dropped – but health bosses have repeated the call for people not to let their guard down.

In its weekly update on the coronavirus situation, chiefs at Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust said the rate of admissions remained ‘somewhat consistent; and that ‘some days are better than others.’

A statement said: “Throughout the past seven days, we have continued to admit individuals who have tested positive for COVID-19, and currently our hospitals are caring for 165 patients, 16 of which require intensive care.

"As we begin to see the impact of tier three restrictions, in addition to the subsequent national measures, our rate of admission remains somewhat consistent.

"However, it is important to note that while some days are better than others, it is clear that COVID-19 continues to circulate within our communities, and we urge local people to continue to observe hands, face and space and break the chain of infection.

"Colleagues continue to work incredibly hard under what are very challenging circumstances and for this we share our thanks. Since March, we have counted upon our health professionals to stand up when it matters most, and, despite these unprecedented circumstances, they continue to stay positive, working diligently, carefully and compassionately for us all.

"The ongoing developments around a potential COVID-19 vaccine give us all great optimism, as well as laying out a preliminary roadmap for how we may return to some sense of normality in the not too distant future.”However, for now, we continue to ask for your support, limiting contact with others outside of your household, maintaining high levels of hand hygiene and wearing a suitable face covering when you are out and about – these are simple measures, but make a huge difference in our fight against this illness.

There have been 385 coronavirus deaths in Doncaster, while 1,000 people have been successfully treated at the area’s three hospitals – Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Mexborough Montagu.
