Responding, a spokesman said: “I would like to reassure you that it's always our intention to practice excellent hygiene standards at M&S. This, of course, extends to every area of our stores, including cleaning trolleys, baskets, screens and all touchpoints every hour.

“And deep cleaning them every night so that customers can shop with confidence. M&S is also installing 'sneeze guards' at till points as an extra precaution. We’re also encouraging our colleagues and customers to follow social distancing in our stores.

“We’ve issued guidance to our stores detailing the range of measures we as individuals should all take to help maintain the recommended distance, our stores will be using what is appropriate for their location such as customer limits and using floor markings.

“I will ensure your feedback is shared with the Store Management Team so we can ensure this is investigated further.”
