Sheffield's coronavirus stats show death toll nearing 900

A further 11 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Sheffield have died, official figures show.

It means 895 people in the city have now died within 28 days of a positive test.

A total of 921 deaths with Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate have been recorded in Sheffield since the pandemic hit.

There were also a further 143 new confirmed positive cases of the illness in the city on Saturday, taking the total number of confirmed positive cases to 33,315.

It comes as the UK recorded 1,295 more deaths and another 41,346 cases on Saturday.

That brings the number of deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test to 88,590.

As of Friday, 3,514,385 people in the UK had received their first vaccination, with 424,327 patients now vaccinated twice, NHS England data shows.

The infection rate in Sheffield was 282 per 100,000 people in the seven days to 11 Jan. The average area in England had 476.
