Sheffield's coronavirus infection rate falls, but cases rising faster elsewhere in South Yorkshire

There were 2,351 confirmed cases of Covid-19 during the seven days to November 2 – the latest date for which reliable data is available – giving a weekly rate of 402.0 new cases per 100,000 people.

That’s down from 2,609 new cases during the previous seven days and a weekly infection rate of 446.1.

In Rotherham, the rate fell slightly from 520.3 to 516.2, while in Doncaster it was down significantly to 518.5 from 572.3.

But in Barnsley, the weekly infection rate rose from 504.7 to 547.7 – the 10th highest rate of any local authority in England.

Sheffield’s infection rate had been among the top 10 nationally but it is now 32nd out of 315 areas.

The infection rate in all parts of South Yorkshire is significantly higher than the national average of 231.8.

The latest figures from Public Health England, published on November 6, show that the infection rate rose in 185 out of 315 areas across England.

Oldham has the highest weekly infection rate, of 781.1, while Hastings has the lowest, at 31.3.

It is too early to say whether the national lockdown, which began on Thursday, has had any impact on infection rates.

The latest figures show the number of beds in Sheffield hospitals occupied by patients with Covid-19 has reached the level it was at its peak during the first wave of the pandemic in April, with 299 overall and 19 in intensive care units.
