Sheffield's coronavirus infection rate falls below 300 - but one area still above 400

The Covid-19 infection rate in Sheffield has fallen, with the number of new cases across South Yorkshire lower than it was the week before.

In Sheffield the infection rate now stands at 296.8 new cases per 100,000 people. This amounts to 1736 new cases in the week to November 13 – the latest week for which NHS figures are available.

Data for the most recent four days (November 14-17) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

In the week to November 6, the infection rate was 362.1 new cases per 100,000 people, which meant there were 2118 confirmed new cases in the city.

A majority of areas in England (232 out of 315) have seen a rise in case rates.

However, the infection rate has fallen in every local authority area in South Yorkshire.

In Doncaster the rate fell from 478.1 in the week to November 6 to 364.2 in the week that followed. This reflects a fall in the number of new cases from 1491 to 1136.

In Rotherham the infection rate fell from 438.9 to 367.4, and in Barnsley it fell from 484.1 to 405.5.

Hull continues to have the highest rate in England, with 1,976 new cases recorded in the seven days to November 13 – the equivalent of 760.6 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up slightly on 731.8 cases per 100,000 in the seven days to November 6.

Hartlepool has the second highest rate, up sharply from 407.8 to 596.8, with 559 new cases.
