The latest NHS England data, released on Wednesday afternoon (12 August), has revealed one further patient who tested positive for Covid-19 has died at one of the city’s hospitals.

It is the first hospital fatality from coronavirus registered since 13 July and takes the hospital death toll in Sheffield to 290 since the pandemic hit.

Nationally, a further 6 people who tested positive for Covid-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to at least 29,431.

The Sheffield fatality was the only one recorded in Yorkshire for this period.

It comes as the UK officially entered into recession for the first time in 11 years after the economy shrunk by a record 20.4 per cent in the three months to June.
