The Clap For Our Carers, or #clapforourcarers, campaign will see people all over the city and across the country applaud the NHS workers from the doorsteps of their homes.

The idea is for everyone in Sheffield to show its appreciation for doctors, nurses, GPs and every other NHS worker during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the applause, which will take place at 8pm tonight, people are being asked to join in from their front doors, gardens, balconies and windows, keeping a safe distance from other people.

Similar events have already taken place in countries such as Spain, France and the Netherlands while Italians have been singing from their homes to lift spirits during the global epidemic.

As well as applauding, people are also being encouraged to live stream their participation on social media and share the videos on social media use the hashtag #clapforourcarers.

He said: “This is a great opportunity for people to show their appreciation of the hundreds of thousands of NHS staff who are risking their own health and lives to cope with the coronavirus crisis. They are all heroes.

“Many are struggling with a lack of resources and protective clothing for themselves and there is also a lack of staff and acute beds to deal with the pandemic.

“This has exposed the overall failure to give the NHS the necessary resources over the last few years and the lesson for the Government is that we need a fully funded and publicly owned health service for the future.”

Jeremy added a residents’ group where he lives on Low Road will be taking part in the applause and there is also a planned event taking place at Park Hill flats.Coronavirus has so far claimed more than 400 lives in the UK and infected over 8,000 people.

Across the world, the death toll stands at more than 20,000.
