Sheffield now SEVENTH worst affected part of country after surge in Covid cases

Sheffield now has the seventh highest coronavirus case rate in the country, new data from Public Health England shows.

The city’s care rate in the seven days to October 5 was 398.2 per 100,000 people, compared to 148.8 per 100,000 people the week before.

This means there were 2,329 positive tests in Sheffield between September 29 and October 5, compared with just 870 between September 21 and 28.

This equates to an increase of more than 150 per cent in one week.

The city's rate puts it seventh in the UK at the moment, behind only Nottingham, Knowsley, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle and Burnley.

Earlier this week, Sheffield's director of public health said he may impose stricter restrictions in the city in light of its increasing case rate

The Government are expected to announce new lockdown levels next week, with the worst affected places seeing hospitality close for an indefinite period.
