Little-known coronavirus symptom shows you may have beaten Covid-19 without realising

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi has said clinical trials are taking place to determine which vaccine gives the “best boost”.

When asked why the Government has ordered the Pfizer vaccine for booster shots later this year, he told Sky News tht scientists are “looking at the data to see whether the durability of the current vaccination programme, how far it lasts”.

He said: “We want them to be able, if they need to, from September onwards to boost those that are most vulnerable.

“Pfizer is one option, we’re going to give them an AstraZeneca option, we’re working with the team on a vaccine variant.

“Clinicians haven’t yet made the decision when they will need to boost, whether to give more immunity to the most vulnerable, to increase the durability of the protection or to deal with the variant.

“When they decide, I want to give them as much optionality, as many vaccines that were, then they will make those choices.

“There’s a clinical trial that Jonathan Van-Tam is conducting called ‘Cov boost’ which looks at which vaccine delivers the best boost.”

The Government said a further four people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Tuesday, bringing the UK total to 127,543.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have been 152,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on Tuesday, there had been a further 1,946 lab-confirmed cases in the UK.

It brings the total to 4,423,796.

Latest coronavirus figures in Sheffield and Barnsley rise this week

Here is Tuesday’s update of Covid-19 case rates for authority areas in England.

The figures, for the seven days to April 30, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (May 1-4) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 103 (33%) have seen a rise in rates, 195 (62%) have seen a fall and 17 are unchanged.

Hyndburn currently has the highest rate, with 124 new cases in the seven days to April 30 – the equivalent of 153.0 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 38.3 in the seven days to April 23.

Bolton has the second highest rate, up from 46.3 to 73.4, with 211 new cases.

North Lincolnshire has the third highest, up from 64.4 to 71.4, with 123 new cases.

In South Yorkshire Barnsley has the highest rate up from 55.9 to 64.4 with 159 new cases.

Sheffield is up from 45.1 to 45.8 with 264 new cases.

Doncaster is down from 55.4 to 62.8 with 207 new cases.

Rotherham, showed a fall to 31.6, (84), from 52.0, (138) the previous week.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

Hyndburn (up from 38.3 to 153.0)

Bolton (46.3 to 73.4)

Wellingborough (27.6 to 48.9)

South Holland (29.5 to 48.4)

Blackburn with Darwen (33.4 to 51.4)

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on May 4 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

The Government said one further person had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Monday, bringing the UK total to 127,539.

However, there is always a lag in reporting deaths – greater at weekends and bank holidays – and today’s figures do not mean that only one death has occurred in the past 24 hours.

Separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have been 152,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The Government also said that, as of 9am on Monday, there had been a further 1,649 lab-confirmed cases in the UK.

It brings the total to 4,421,850.
