Sheffield is nearing the grim milestone of 1,000 Covid deaths within 28 days of a positive test, new NHS figures have revealed.

Six further recorded deaths have pushed the city's tally up to 996 people who have died from Covid within 28 days of testing positive for the virus, NHS England has said.

The city has already surpassed that total with the number of deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate.

That figure currently stands at 1,062.

Meanwhile, the city’s hospitals have seen a total of 797 deaths – with the figure increasing by five since yesterday.

Doncaster has seen 674 deaths, an increase of seven, while Rotherham has recorded 519 deaths, an increase of 3.

Barnsley has seen 529 deaths, up five on yesterday’s total.

Nationally, there have been more than 109,000 coronavirus deaths in the UK and nearly four million cases.

More than 10 million people have now received a Covid-19 vaccine jab.
