Sheffield councillor recovering from coronavirus in hospital

One of Sheffield's most well-known and respected councillors is recovering from coronavirus in hospital.

Coun Pat Midgley tested positive for Covid-19 and is receiving oxygen in hospital but does not require a ventilator.

Her son Neil tweeted: " She was admitted to hospital on Tuesday night and confirmed with Covid 19 yesterday.

"On oxygen/fluids not ventilator and slowly improving. We’ve had an incredible amount of offers of support and help, she’s clearly a well loved woman."

Pat, who represents the Manor Castle ward, had announced she would stand down at the next election after serving for 33 years. May's local elections have now been postponed until 2021.

Fellow councillors have been sending their get well wishes. Labour councillors, including Cabinet members Bob Johnson and Mazher Iqbal, all sent their best. Coun Sioned-Mair Richards said Pat was "absolutely and totally beloved".

There were also sentiments from Green and Liberal Democrat councillors. Coun Bob Pullin said: "For over 20 years we have appreciated Pat’s commitment, dedication and devotion to helping others as a fellow magistrate, councillor and friend. Please give her our very best wishes for full, speedy recovery."

And Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Leader of the Lib Dems, said: "Sending best wishes to Pat and hope that her health improves. She is being helped by some of the most incredible NHS workers in the country."

Pat was elected in 1987 for Nether Edge and represented it for eight years before moving to Manor ward.
